I-STARS Project Advocates Sustainable Tourism as a Pathway to Resilience on World Tourism Day 202427/9/2024 In celebration of World Tourism Day 2024 on 27th September, the I-STARS project underscores the pivotal role of tourism in promoting peace, sustainability, and building a more resilient and innovative sustainable tourism ecosystem across Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Italy and Spain. Under the theme of "Tourism and Peace," this year's commemoration aligns closely with the I-STARS project's mission to empower tourism MSMEs in transforming into sustainable businesses.
Tourism stands as a powerful tool for fostering understanding and reconciliation among nations and cultures, supporting social justice, human rights, and sustainable development. As highlighted by the I-STARS project, tourism businesses in Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Italy and Spain had the opportunity to receive funding of up to €5,600 to implement sustainability initiatives and work towards recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Through initiatives like the I-STARS project, we aim to harness the potential of tourism to not only spur resilience and innovation but also to foster sustainable practices that promote peace and harmony. The I-STARS e-Learning courses include stakeholder engagement, reinforcing the project’s commitment to peace-sensitive tourism. By empowering businesses to engage with their communities, employees, and consumers, I-STARS ensures that sustainable practices are not only adopted but are also inclusive and collaborative, echoing the themes of stakeholder-driven peacebuilding. World Tourism Day 2024 serves as a platform to highlight the importance of tourism in building bridges, fostering dialogue, and promoting peace worldwide. Through collaborative efforts and innovative strategies, the I-STARS project continues to pave the way for a sustainable future through tourism. I-STARS project is an innovative project with partners from Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Italy and Spain, co-funded by the European Union. It is dedicated to enhancing the sustainability knowledge and practices of tourism SMEs, fostering their transformation towards recovery and long-term viability. I-STARS promotes the sustainability monitoring of a company as a valuable tool to initiate improvements and increase efficiency. For this reason, the purpose of the I-START Monitoring Tool is to provide tourism businesses with a monitoring system to measure and compare the positiveimpact of more sustainablebusiness operations on the costs, environment, society, and the local economy. An open-access tool: The I-STARS Monitoring Tool is online, for free, and can be used on a computer or mobile device. In addition, it is available in Greek, English, Italian and Spanish. A tool for measuring and improving sustainability in the tourism sector:The tool is designed for companies in the tourism sector, such as accommodation, restaurants, tour operators, museums, and other recreational and cultural activities. The I-STARS Monitoring Tool allows SMEs to monitor, analyse and record their business performance in waste management, carbon emissions, food waste management, energy management, water management, and local community engagement by filling 7 dedicated questionnaires:
A scoring system to monitor progress over time: After completing each questionnaire, each user will receive a report with its sustainability score. By repeating the questionnaires, it will be possible to monitor progress over time. This will help businesses understand the efficiency, cost and competitiveness improvements that result from implementing more sustainable actions and activities. One more tool in the I-STARS toolbox: The monitoring tool is complementary to other resources made available by I-STARS to tourism companies, such as the 6 online courses to empower organisations in their journey towards sustainability.
