In the VIII Edition of the Tourism Fair in Palermo, Sicily (BTE-2024: web https://borsaturismoextralberghiero.it ), next Friday, 8th, 2024 at 3.00 pm, Professor Giovanni Ruggieri, President of the Observatory on Tourism for Islands Economy (OTIE), will present OTIE’s latest report focused on the sustainability challenges faced by small and micro-enterprises in the alternative or extra-hotel accommodation sector, particularly in island contexts. OTIE’s report examines the vital role of Sicily’s extra-hotel sector, which includes vacation homes, bed & breakfasts, and guesthouses, and its growing importance in the regional tourism landscape. The presentation will highlight key challenges such as over-tourism, under-tourism, and the environmental impacts of tourism on island economies. The report also outlines necessary strategies for these businesses to transition towards sustainability, emphasizing the importance of certification and innovative solutions to foster environmental responsibility. OTIE, a non-profit organization committed to research and development in island tourism, draws on data from European islands to advocate for policies that promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability in tourism. The conference will offer a platform for discussing the necessary financial and regulatory frameworks to support sustainable tourism in island regions, address disparities, and ensure sector resilience. This presentation is a significant step in OTIE’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and drive positive change for sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean and beyond.
