Sicily – Italy: OTIE joins the Charta of Selinunte



The Observatory has subscribed the Charta of Selinunte, proposed by the cultural itinerary of Phoenicians’ Route, of the European Institute of Cultural Routes and the European Council. The declaration of intent has the aim to realize the “Hannibal Route”, an intercultural lab-route for the training, culture and development of the Mediterranean territories.

11 February

OTIE’S grant to attend a Master of Tourism



OTIE has given a scholarship to attend a University Master, organized by the Palermo University of Studies, entitled «Promotion, Management and Use of Tourist Systems and Cultural Heritage». The course, directed to 20 graduates, and coordinated by Prof. Francesco Andria, aims to train new characters capable in organizing and managing tourism into destinations.

Ragusa – ItalY: OTIE organizes a seminar about Tourism on the islands



OTIE, together with Soroptmist club in Ragusa, the Feminine Entrepreneurship Committee and the Cultural Service center in Ragusa, has organized a debate on tourism in the islands, its characteristics, restraints and main opportunities. The presence of entrepreneurs and institutions has allowed to promote new forms of tourism, typical in European insular context.

OTIE FOUNDER MEMBER OF THE GEIE “phoenicians’ route ”



OTIE, together with Ibertur, the European Phoenicias’n Route, the Jasmine Route and the INEACEM, subscribes the constitution of GEIE – European Economic Interest Grouping – named “Phoenicians’ Route“, with the aim to start some support activities for European cultural routes.


18-23 April

cultural exchanges for the training of skilled tourist guides



Thanks to the agreement between OTIE and the Institut d’Etudes Appliqués des Civilisations et des Espaces Méditerranéens a training course for guides-interpreters, working in the cultural routes in the European islands, has been established.
The students, coming from Corsica, have attended a programme including exchanges and practical activities in cultural sites, as Selinunte (Sicily).


21-24 May

Hammamet – Tunisia: OTIE presents a document at MEDITOUR 2008



On the occasion of the forum MEDITOUR 2008, organized by the Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) in Hammamet (Tunisia), the Observatory has presented a report about the characteristics of tourism in the Mediterranean Islands and the growth scenarios.
At the end of the conference a document, including advices about policies on Tourism in the Mediterranean area, has been approved.

12-13 June

Gozo – Malta: 1st executive training programme for insular managers



OTIE has participated into the organization of the 1st “executive training programme” at Gozo University. The meetings, promoted by INSULEUR, in cooperation with “Gozo Business Chamber” and “Small States Institute University of Malta”, have taken place thanks also to the cooperation of chamber’s managers and insular public directors.

Barcelona – Spain: International workshop “de Rutas e itinerarios culturales”



OTIE has presented at Barcelona University (Spain) a report about the subject “Strategies to exploit the phoenician-punic heritage and develop archeological tourism”. The workshop was organized by IBERTUR and Université Paris 1, with the UNESCO high patronage.

OTIE promotes the project of the mediterranean polythcnic



OTIE, entrusted by Università degli Studi di Palermo, has promoted the enterprise of the Mediterranean Polytechnic, organising 3 education meetings. These meetings have been set at the Chamber of Commerce of Tangier (Morocco), at the
Helwan University in Cairo (Egypt) and the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Athens (Greece)

OTIE participates at the 58th AIEST word congress



In the course of the 58th Congress of the International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism OTIE’s President has presented, in Vancouver (Canada), a research work applied on the Aeolian Islands. The debate has involved some representatives of Universities and International Research Institutes from Switzerland, Canada, Japan, South-Africa and Australia.

Stromboli – Italy: OTIE sponsors the international fire dancing festival



OTIE is one of the technical sponsor of the venue, in which fire will be the cornerstone. The venue is organized in Stromboli, in the Aeolian Islands (Sicily), by Società Argomenti of Palermo e dall’Associazione Elementi of Stromboli. The exhibition, designed as a travelling show, provides a display of  balance numbers and dances with fire by artists from Italy, Israel, New Zealand, France, Indonesia, Austria, Germany, and Australia.

OTIE founder member of «Assonautica Euro-mediterranea»



OTIE is founder member of Assonautica Euro-mediterranea, promoted by Assonautica Italiana, with the aim to start some projects and initiatives about promotion and development of boating and cruise tourism into main euro-mediterranean countries.

OTIE supports the organization of the 1st world conference on volcanoes



OTIE has participated, as expert of the organizing committee, at the organization of the 1st International Conference “Volcanoes, Landscapes and Culture”, scheduled in Catania (Italy). The initiative, promoted by INSULA and the Unesco Center in Catania “Maria Elisa Brischetto”, aims to realize an international conference with a scientific character into territories with volcanic nature.

Realization of the 1st Focus on Tourism in the European Islands



OTIE has realized the 1st Focus on Tourism in the European Islands, in the Mediterranean basin, of the Atlantic Sea and the French overseas areas. The islands politically belong to following countries: Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain. The main statistic indicators of tourist demand and supply , from 2003 to 2007, have been presented. The work is the result of a long research of data sourcing from National Statistic Institutes, from regional tourist offices and the insular Chambers of Commerce.

Réunion (France) – OTIE 2nd general assembly



On the occasion of the annual INSULEUR Forum in the island of Reunion, the 2nd OTIE General Assembly has been held, in the presence of the members, the representatives of the Chambers of Commerce, the Universities, the Institutes of Research and the public insular Administrations.
